Cricket stadium at Varanasi

As of my last knowledge update in September 2021, Varanasi, one of India’s oldest and most culturally rich cities, does not have a dedicated international cricket stadium. However, there have been discussions and plans to develop a cricket stadium in the city, considering the popularity of cricket in India and the growing interest in the sport.

The absence of a major cricket stadium in Varanasi has led cricket enthusiasts in the region to rely on neighboring cities such as Kanpur, Lucknow, and Allahabad to watch top-level cricket matches. The lack of a stadium within Varanasi has been a source of disappointment for both cricket fans and local cricketers.

There have been proposals to construct a cricket stadium in Varanasi to promote the sport and provide a venue for domestic and possibly international matches. The potential location and funding for such a project are subjects of ongoing discussion, and it may take some time before a cricket stadium becomes a reality in the city.

Cricket is immensely popular in India, and many cities have invested in modern cricket facilities to host both domestic and international matches. If Varanasi were to establish a cricket stadium, it could become a significant sporting hub in the region, attracting not only cricketing events but also promoting sports development and recreation in the area.

PM Modi on September 22 2023 laid the foundation stone for an international cricket stadium in Varanasi. This will be Uttar Pradesh’s third international cricket stadium after Kanpur and Lucknow. Varanasi’s international cricket stadium will be built on Rs 121 crore land.An approximate Rs 330 crore will be spent on the construction of the cricket stadium, the Uttar Pradesh government said in a press statement. The stadium will accommodate nearly 30,000 people at a time.
